The latest erectile dysfunction drugmaker has entered into a deal to sell Viagra, the world’s best-known erectile dysfunction medication.
A $1.9 billion deal was announced by drugmaker Mylan, which is developing a generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction drug called sildenafil, which has been available in generic form since 1998.
The deal, which was announced on January 4, will see Mylan lose $1.3 billion to start up the generic version of the drug Viagra, while the company will pay a combined $250 million in additional cash to start up the generic version of Cialis, which is currently available only as an over-the-counter version of the drug.
The deal will also allow Mylan to begin selling generic versions of Viagra and Cialis as well as a number of other other medications.
“I have no intention of slowing down, but I am extremely excited to see the launch of Viagra,” said Dr. Ian Read, Pfizer’s chairman and chief executive. “I know how important it is that our customers get the best possible treatment from a generic drug.”
Pfizer’s patent on the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra expires in 2017, and Mylan is seeking to sell the drug to customers who have filed generic patents covering the active ingredient in Cialis.
In the deal, Mylan will be acquiring a number of other companies from Pfizer, including an Indian company, GlaxoSmithKline plc.
The deal is expected to close on December 8, making the drug a popular choice among men who have difficulty getting and maintaining an erection after taking a pill.
